Unlike other Animal Crossing games, Happy Home Designer doesn’t just drop you off in the middle of nowhere with a massive amount of debt to pay. Nor does it have a 24-hour day cycle, fauna to catch, or bells to earn. What it does have, however, is one of the most perfectly executed and unbelievably charming sets of design tools I’ve seen in gaming. Happy Home Designer topped the weekly charts again in its second week of sale, selling a further 181,377 units. Its lifetime total currently stands at 844,167 copies sold in Japan.

Happy Home Designer is also compatible with the Villager amiibo, and when scanned will unlock a Villager Statue, an exclusive furniture item that can be used to decorate villager homes. The Amiibo phone is a device invented by Lyle found in Nook's Homes. The player can use it with the amiibo cards to make phone calls to villagers and request to remodel their house. In addition to designing the room for the villager depicted on the card, the player can scan the cards to invite them over to other villagers' houses.
Once the amiibo phone is unlocked (after a few in-game days), the player can use amiibo cards to contact and decorate for specific characters that might not otherwise appear in-game. Using the phone to scan a Villager amiibo will unlock a golden statue of the generic Super Smash Bros. Join Happy Home Designer, you will become a manager of a real estate centre, where you can design houses for people or public works to create a city in its own style. Starting the game you will customize your own character with a variety of options including gender, skin colour, outfit, etc. The top screen will display the house and its contents in detail, while the bottom screen will show them as colorful squares that play a role in helping players easily move furniture more accurately.

You just can't beat strolling around a town of your own design, collecting bugs and fish to further improvements. Ultimately what I really want is to take everything I've learned from designing rooms for frogs and take it back to my New Leaf town for my own personal use. If the two concepts are ever combined my loved ones will probably never see me again as I turn myself into a shut in, but for now this is a fantastic way to tide yourself over until that glorious day comes.
Players can use amiibo on their New Nintendo 3DS systems, because it has a built-in NFC reader, which is necessary to use amiibo. Nintendo 3DS and 2DS users can buy the NFC reader peripheral, which was released on the same day as Happy Home Designer. The game interacts with New Leaf, primarily by allowing the player to unlock exclusive furniture through the Nookling Junction kiosk.

In addition to the initial customization, the player is able to edit their character's appearance later in the game as well. In order to do so, the player first needs to unlock the Styling Machine on the second floor of Nook's Homes. This can be achieved through purchasing and completing the Styling Machine course lesson in the Happy Home Handbook. In addition to arranging the interior of the houses, you can also design the exterior according to the themes set out by customers. The game integrates with Animal Crossing Amiibo cards; scanning cards allows their respective character to visit a home that a player had designed, and allows players to design homes for other major characters such as K.K. With there being many villagers, there are many different tasks you can do. Another big nitpick is that no matter what, your villager says they love their new house whether it only has three furniture or you have spent hours on it. But that also does mean that it is optional how much effort you're willing to put in the home.
Happy Home Designer sprung out of the development team thinking about interior design in New Leaf and other previous entries in the series. It was decided to make a game based around interior design after the development team wanted to share the lives of villagers with the player. The developers had considered adding a budget limit to the game, but it was decided that it was a better decision to not impose any external limitations on the player's design choices. Happy Home Designer was produced by Aya Kyogoku and Hisashi Nogami, with direction credits by Isao Moro, and is the first Animal Crossing series title to have a female producer.
